Summa Tower

Building for Population Health

In 2016, Summa Health announced plans for up to $350 million in facility improvements to help the system deliver on its population health strategy. Some $270 million will go into Phase I of the facility plan over the next five years including a new inpatient facility and medical office building on the Summa Akron campus along with expanded outpatient services, and state-of-the-art operating rooms.

Highlights of the facility plan include:

  • A new "front door" to Summa Health-Akron Campus through a landmark 300,000 square-foot patient tower that will greet visitors and serve both as a beautiful addition to the city's skyline and a reminder of the continued rebirth and revitalization of the city. The tower will include new facilities for Summa's Women's Health program, modern inpatient rooms and nursing units and expanded surgical capacity.
  • Increasing the number of private rooms to approximately 80 percent of beds at the Akron Campus.
  • Adding a 50,000 square-foot medical office building on the Akron Campus that will integrate new design concepts and promote a team-based model of care.
  • Providing increased outpatient capacity across the system, with the ability to design around patient-centered care.
